The designer of the medal was Nathan Karp. On a 38 mm cupro-nickel disc of 20 gram weight, a raised service emblem upon incuse lines part of the candelabra. The service emblem is surrounded by two olive branches which spring forth from five links of a chain. The ribbon is blue with a thin white stripe.

Medal: silver medal without silver mark but with serial number (here covered).

Clasp: Dimensions 45.2 x 14 mm. Silver mark 925 on the lower right corner.

Ribbon width 40 mm.

The current medal shows the new symbol of the Prison Service. No longer made of silver.
